Nashville Symphony | Beethoven’s “Heroic” Symphony #3

Nashville Symphony
Brett Mitchell, conductor
Edgar Meyer, double bass
Sam Bacco, percussion
Beethoven began composing his 3rd Symphony in honor of Napoleon, whom he believed was earnest in his bringing liberty to the French people. When it became apparent that Napoleon was nothing but another ‘tyrant,’ he re-dedicated his title to In memory of a great man. So the title “Eroica” or “Heroic” is ironic.
This concert also features a Double Bass Concerto, which is rare to hear, and music by Samuel Barber.
Program
Samuel Barber: Medea’s Meditation and Dance of Vengeance
Edgar Meyer: Concerto No. 2 for Double Bass in B
Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”)
